In the world of Terra Mystica, 14 distinct peoples are bound to their own home landscapes, and to grow, they must terraform neighboring lands into their preferred terrain while competing against other factions. This is a game of pure strategy — no luck, no dice — rewarding careful planning and subtlety. Each player controls one faction, each with unique special abilities, and must expand their territory while developing their group's skills and progressing in four religious cults.
Players take turns spending resources to build and upgrade structures. Dwellings produce workers, Trading Houses generate coins, Strongholds unlock a faction's special power, and Temples boost your religion, terraforming, and seafaring abilities. Buildings can be upgraded in a chain: Dwellings become Trading Houses, which can become either Strongholds or Temples, and one Temple can be upgraded to a Sanctuary. Every faction must also develop its terraforming skill and boat skill to cross rivers.
The 14 groups are tied to seven landscapes: Desert (Fakirs, Nomads), Plains (Halflings, Cultists), Swamp (Alchemists, Darklings), Lake (Mermaids, Swarmlings), Forest (Witches, Auren), Mountain (Dwarves, Engineers), and Wasteland (Giants, Chaos Magicians). Proximity to other groups is a double-edged sword — being close gives you extra power, but it also makes expanding harder. Terra Mystica challenges you to balance growth, competition, and clever use of your faction's strengths to rule as much of the land as possible.
